Does high levels of progesterone mean that you're pregnant?

Orion_99 - September 2nd, 2010 3:06 AM

Not too sure. But I do know that the female body continues to produce progesterone throughout the pregnancy.

On the other hand, low progesterone levels can contribute to miscarriages or preterm labor.

Maybe a surge can mean that you are pregnant. Remember that hormones increase during pregnancy. So it might be possible that a high level of progesterone can mean that you are pregnant!

I agree with the above. Hormone levels will rise when you are pregnant. However in a preg test, isnt it the HCG levels that are measured?

xXxNANxXx - September 5th, 2010 2:21 AM

Hormones are important because they regulate bodily functions. The adjustment in hormones during pregnancy is also to accomodate the new being inside the woman's body.

It does not always follow. pregnancy is usually measured by HCG hormones not progesterone but an increase in progesterone usually happens so as not to have uterine lining shedding.

candyKane - September 9th, 2010 3:21 AM

if you dont have enough progesterone, you could lose your baby. i dunno what the optimum levels are but an increase in hormone levels during pregnancy is quite normal.

wow... candyKane

I never knew that low levels can cause miscarriage. Perhaps progesterone supplements can be prescirbed to get avoid this sort of thing.

there will be an increase in progesterone and other hormone levels. As I understand it, progesterone helps maintain the uterine lining preventing miscarriage or preterm labor.

Yes! Progesterone will increase as you get further along the way!
