how can orchitis hamper male fertility?

SJ23 - November 1st, 2010 2:55 AM

For some males who experience mumps, orchitis happens. This is when their testicles swell and infection happens. In some cases this causes them to become infertile.

mumps alone causes orchitis or are there other reasons?

I think only males who get mumps during puberty are in danger of developing orchitis. And only a small percent actually have infertility problems.

When the swelling and infection happens, the affect effect of this in some cases is infertility.

Orchitis can be related to epididymitis infection that has spread to the testicles, often caused by the sexually transmitted diseases chlamydia and gonorrhea. It can also be seen during active mumps, particularly in adolescent boys.

Ischemic orchitis may result from damage to the blood vessels of the spermatic cord during inguinal herniorrhaphy, and may in the worst event lead to testicular atrophy.

The anti-depressant drug trimipramine (Surmontil) has been known to cause orchitis.
