How long can sperm live OUTSIDE the body?

jobelyn - September 17th, 2010 11:21 PM

Sperm usually die inside the vagina within less than an hour. But they can survive inside the uterus for up to 5 days. But outside the human body with open air, they will usually die within minutes.

When outside the human body, sperm can't really survive long enough..it just take a few minutes I guess.

Yes, that so little time the sperm can live outside the human body.

Sperm has long life compared to egg which can only live up to 24 hours and this decreases as women get older.

jedimaster745 - October 11th, 2010 3:54 AM

this really means that timing is important if you want to have baby!

EarthyGal - October 13th, 2010 2:53 AM

I agree. Timing is everything when you want to get pregnant. The sperm lives long but the egg does not. Only up to 24 hrs and it gets shorter as the woman gets older.

5 days in the uterus, minutes or hours outside the uterus. outside, it can die almost immediately.

Ysah - October 17th, 2010 6:27 AM

Sperm life is really not that long enough to stay outside of the human body that's why,to be able to get pregnant is really a miracle to consider, right?

zzerrgzz - October 24th, 2010 2:26 AM

not long. this is why when you go for a sperm donation. they freeze it almost immediately to preserve it.

DEB - October 27th, 2010 2:23 AM

hmmm i heard 5 hours??? guess I was wrong.

Rrrakesh - November 2nd, 2010 3:06 AM

But what about those sperm donations in sperm banks? Aren't men required to ejaculate in a cup. Not that I've tried it before, but don't tell me they don't have to clean up afterwards? It might get messy. If the time outside the human body the sperm can survive is very limited, in the minutes, that means they'll have to be running even with their pants down to turn in the sperm?

Alison_Marshall - January 27th, 2011 4:28 PM

Rrrakesh makes sense. What I heard was that as soon as the sperm gets out of the male and into the open air, they die.

But I never really thought about how they preserved the sperm in the sperm banks
