The Risks of Intrauterine Insemination

One of the most common and major risks of IUI is multiple pregnancy. The patient is injected with billions of sperm in hopes to fertilize several eggs leading to more than one egg getting fertilized. This can result in carrying twins, triplets, or a higher multiple pregnancy. Doctors cannot accurately control how many eggs will grow or dissipate on the follicles therefore leading to an increased risk in multiple births. In some cases, significantly high multiple births of seven, eight, or more babies have been reported. While this may be a blessing to some couples and/or individuals, it can also become a significant burden both physically and financially and could cause long-term medical conditions in the future.

Buyer Beware

In clinics that are poorly equipped and are primarily available to low-income couples and/or individuals, the risk of developing an infection after an IUI is greater. This is due in improper sterilization techniques and can cause infertility that cannot be repaired or reversed. These are not always staffed by fertility specialists.

Many obstetricians and gynecologists offer IUI treatment. Most of these doctors are not adequately specialized to complete the procedure flawlessly in every case. Because of this, couples and/or individuals typically have to research other doctors that are more specialized and more trusted by other couples and women. This can take a significant amount of time and can often times can become a frustrating and extremely emotional experience for couples and/or women. To prevent this from happening, searching for clinics that offer all OBGYN services at the same location is ideal and will save a ton of money and frustration.

More That You MUST Know

The other major risk of IUI is that many obstetricians and gynecologists tend to repeat this procedure several times to bring in more money to their practice and because they do not have enough of these types of treatments to do. Instead of referring couples and/or women to IVF treatments, doctors will continue to conduct IUI for as many as 12 or more cycles. Often times, patients will become frustrated with continuous failure and many tiring efforts of conceiving using the same procedure.

Not only do couples, especially women, go through significant physically challenging procedures, they endure many emotional and financial burdens as well. The emotional risks involved with repetitive IUI treatments can include depression, anger management, anxiety, and many other stress-induced mental health and emotional problems to be endured throughout the couple’s and/or woman’s lifetime.
