Recombinant Follicle Stimulating Hormone

Recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH) is used to help stimulate ovulation in women who are having specific problems ovulating. This increases the chances of pregnancy since it ensures there is an egg present in the fallopian tube to fertilize.

What rFSH Does

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a naturally occurring hormone that's secreted by the pituitary gland, a tiny gland in your brain. FSH belongs to a group of hormones called the gonadotropins. These are responsible for stimulating your ovaries, and PSH specifically is responsible for stimulating the growth of follicles inside the ovaries. These follicles will mature and develop and release eggs for fertilization.

How rFSH is Given

Recombinant FSH is a synthetic form of FSH produced using DNA technology. rFSH helps to induce ovulation in preparation for fertility treatments like IVF and IUI. rFSH represents 98% of all FSH used in fertility treatments today. rFSH is helpful in correcting annovulation, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, and PCOS.

Recombinant FSH is usually given as a 70-600 IU injection and it's typically started on day two or three of your menstrual cycle. Side effects include abdominal and breast tenderness, fluid retention and swelling, fatigue, headaches, and irritability. The probability of multiple births also increases with rFSH; since it stimulates ovulation, there's a chance that more than one egg may be released and fertilized.

Seventy to ninety percent of women taking rFHS begin to ovulate, and pregnancy rates with rFSH are between twenty and thirty percent.
