There is no definitive answer for why women get morning sickness. Therefore, there are many suggestions for morning sickness remedies and no one remedy that everyone agrees will work. Each woman needs to do the research for herself and experiment with ideas that might work for her.

Morning Blues

Morning sickness can last all day for some women, but, in general, it is the most intense when you first wake up in the morning. For this reason, it's usually a good idea to go to be bed on a full stomach. The acids in your stomach become irritated if your stomach is empty. While trying to keep your stomach full, eat foods that are high in protein such as hard-boiled eggs, cheese and yogurt. Avoid foods that are full of carbohydrates, as they can cause a drop in you blood sugar. Keep some type of crackers by your bed in case you wake in the middle of the night, or in the morning, starving or nauseous. Finally, don't rush to get out of bed in the morning. Stay in place for about 15 minutes and eat a few plain crackers or toast to settle your stomach.

Smelling Blues

Smells can bring on a feeling of nausea, and many pregnant women will report to you about the smells that trigger their issues. Try to figure out early on which smells bother you and avoid them! Leave on a fan or open the windows when you cook. Cooking with the microwave tends to create less odors and might be better for you while you are sensitive to smells. The most common smells that cause problems for pregnant women include meat, fish, chicken, greasy or fatty foods, coffee, onions, garlic and spices that smell strong.

Eating Issues

When you're pregnant and feeling sick, it's important to work with your cravings and to eat often. Give yourself frequent protein snacks and eat small meals every two hours. Eat something salty before the meal, as this can sometimes settle your stomach and don't drink anything with the food. Avoid anything that is greasy or spicy as this can trigger heartburn and more nausea. Many teas, including peppermint and ginger teas, can help with nausea. Just make sure you are drinking the decaffeinated kind.

Ginger Does the Trick

Research has shown that ginger can help to combat morning sickness. Try to find natural ginger products such as tea, ginger ale, ginger snaps and ginger capsules. Many people report that ginger does tend to help them - although others find it to be too strong.

Keep in mind at all times that this period will pass and that you will feel better again. Remember that you are doing this for a great reason and that you will have a wonderful baby to show for your struggles!
