Moderating

Thank you for helping make the Getting Pregnant communities a better place!

There are three communities:
1. The Getting Pregnant community is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gettingpregnantcommunity/
2. The Got Pregnant community is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gettingpregnant_gotpregnant/
3. The Mums community is at http://groups.yahoo.com/gettingpregnantmums

There is a board specifically for Moderators of both boards to discuss issues and concerns and to flag things to me - it is at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/newgettingpregnantmoderators/ and once you're a moderator you will be automatically added as a member. It is important that you regularly check this board, and failure to do so could mean your removal as a moderator - all moderators need to understand any issues or policy changes and this is where these are discussed and communicated.

Anyone can join the Getting Pregnant community, but membership to the Got Pregnant board is restricted to those who have been confirmed as pregnant. We do not issue invites to the Got Pregnant board as they were sometimes arriving at insensitive times in instances of early pregnancy losses. Instead, pregnant members of Getting Pregnant are congratulated by one of the moderators and told that they can apply to Got Pregnant when they feel ready. That moderator then posts this news on the moderator board so the Got Pregnant moderators can watch out for the application and approve it.

The main role of the Moderators is to:

  • on Getting, approve messages; due to problems in the past with inappropriate posts we do not allow anyone to post without a moderator checking and approving it. (We don't need to do this on Got or Mums because by the time people get there we generally know we can trust them!).
  • watch out for messages that shouldn't be on the boards because they're nothing to do with getting pregnant (for example there have been posts in the past about a chain letter to make money). You can delete those messages and - where appropriate - ban the person who posted it.
  • keep an eye on the boards generally and, if you feel someone is not saying or doing the right things, gently bring them back into line or let me know so we can discuss whether they should be banned. Now and again people do criticise moderators, the site or the board. No-one should have to put up with this, so you should delete such messages and let us know so we can discuss whether that user should be banned.
  • on the Getting boards, watch out for messages covering topics which are already on the main site and point people there (so you'll need to be quite familiar with the Getting Pregnant site)
  • help anyone out if they're having problems using the board
  • one of the terms and conditions says people shouldn't include links to sites which contain information already on Getting Pregnant, so you will be keeping an eye on this and - where appropriate - pointing out to the poster that this shouldn't be done and - again where appropriate - deleting such messages.
  • make sure there's a "flow" to the boards - not too many unanswered questions or unwelcomed new members.
  • generally ensure that the Community is a good supportive place for everyone and that all users get the most from the Getting Pregnant experience

Anything you post to the board is your own personal opinion and you should not ever give the impression that you are medically qualified or speaking for Getting Pregnant (other than when ensuring the terms and conditions are adhered to).

It's up to you how much time you spend on the Getting Pregnant board, although if we feel there is insufficient moderation going on, we may call for additional moderators and possibly remove your privileges. However we recognise you have a life, so hopefully by having more than one moderator, we have the site pretty well covered!

If you know you're not going to be accessing the board for more than 2-3 days, please tell us (apart from anything else, it stops us worrying about you!)

HOW TO BAN SOMEONE

Only do this where someone has clearly not got an interest in getting pregnant. If you're unsure about it, contact me so we can discuss.

Go to the list of members and find the poster's email address.

Then click the Ban link above it (or go to ) and add their email address.

If they've chosen not to disclose their email address we can't ban them, but you can delete their profile by putting a check in the Remove box alongside their profile name in the members list.

DELETING MESSAGES

Now you're a Moderator, alongside each message there should now be a check box. Click in the box alongside the messages) you want to delete and then click the Delete box at the top or bottom of the page.

MODERATOR EMAILS

You may find you're copied on emails sent to gettingpregnantcommunity-owner@yahoogroups.com . These go to all moderators, although it may look like you're the only one that got it. If you deal with it, please ensure you include that address in your reply so we all know you've dealt with it.

IF IN DOUBT

If you're unsure or worried about anything at all, contact the moderators board.

THE BORING STUFF

I'm afraid I have to remind you that we can remove your Moderator privileges at any time if we feel you're not making a valid contribution or following the guidelines in this note, and we do not have to explain my reasons for doing this. You may resign at any time by contacting the moderators board.

Moderators should not have discussions on the main boards about moderating!
