Fact: Mumps can cause male infertility.

Chloe88 - May 21st, 2010 4:20 PM

mumps only affects infertility if it causes orchitis or testes inflammation. this does happen but only rarely.

It has been highly suggested and documented that this can be a factor for male infertility. Especially when the male gets mumps during puberty.

Ive read about cases like this. I'm surprised to learn that not all cases make the males infertile as it was stressed repeatedly. But on another note, it's great to know that not all men go infertile because of mumps.

We have a neighbor who had mumps during puberty and now he has low sperm count. I think its a case to case basis.

RickyFer - July 15th, 2010 11:06 AM

It is observed since the time of my grandfather that if a man has a mumps then it is expected that it can become infertile for his whole life. And until now it is observed, which is found to be true.

i think its a case to case thing. if you catch it as a child then its ok but if you're going through puberty then it could be an issue.

really, isnt this an old wives tale? hasnt mumps been eradicated yet and its not a threat to the civilized world anymore?

Permanent loss of fertility is rare, but up to a third of men who get this disease develop Mumps Orchitis,a consequence of which can be reduced formation of sperms.

so it is not in all cases.

Only if the mumps are associated with orchitis (inflammation of the testicles). Fortunately, most cases of mumps are not associated with orchitis. Also, not all with mumps orchitis develop infertility. If orchitis develops, it leads to abnormal, poor or absence of sperm production.
