Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis: PGD

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a genetic procedure used prior to implantation to help identify genetic defects within an embryo created through in vitro fertilization and to prevent certain diseases or disorders from being passed on to the child. In most cases, the female, the male, or both have been genetically screened and determined to be carriers.

~from the American Pregnancy Association website

If you ask me this is a must if you're using donor egg/sperm/embryo.

If couples or a person should opt to have kids using other peoples sperm/egg or embryo, full disclosure on the medical history should be a must.

Aside from going through a very expensive procedure just to get pregnant, we all hope for healthy and normal kids. So for me PGD should be SOP.

this is one of the downside of using eggs and sperm that is not your own. You dont know the complete history of genetic diseases and there is a risk you pass them to the offspring.

Donor screening is a must. You cant get too careful in this day and age!

I would only go to a reputable banking facility for sperm or egg.

I agree. there should be full disclosure on the medical history of the donor!

Correct me if im wrong but dont they give you documents and background info on the donor? I hope that they do background check on the donors after they are submitted to really know whether they have the right info or not.

Its hard enough to deal with that you have to get reproductive cells from donors and then you have to risk genetic diseases. While I am for PGD, I dont think I would want to use cells that are not mine or my husband's.
