An endometrial biopsy is a test on the uterine lining to determine if the endometrium (or lining of the uterus) is undergoing normal monthly changes during the menstrual cycle. If there are no changes, this could mean that there are fertility issues.

errr....ok but when would you need and how do you know that you need one?

probably when you have irregular periods. when periods are irregular, the lining is not shed and the endometrium is exposed every month to more hormones. When this happens it increases the risk of cancer.

Wife had an endometrial biopsy after a D&C. she has PCOS and it caused her to have irregular periods. one time, she did not get her period for 3 months and an ultrasound revealed that her lining has thickened up. So after the D&C she had biopsy to tell whether or not she had endometrial cancer which can happen if you dont get your period often.

isnt this lining shed every month? this is why we menstrate right?

its shed every month, but if you have hormonal imbalance then it might be possible that you dont get your period. hence the lining will stay in the uterus and get exposed to more hormones which can cause cellular abnormalities. that's why they do a biopsy after a d d&C
